Average Salary in the US by State
Answer
The median salary in the US was $50,980 a year ($24.51 an hour) in May 2025; the mean (average) was $69,770. The mean is higher because a minority of very high earners pulls it up, so the median is the better guide to a typical paycheck. State medians range widely, and prices range nearly as much, so the ranking changes once pay is adjusted for each state's cost of living.
