Estimate only, not tax advice: a filer with no other income, the standard deduction, no pre-tax deductions and only the credits that apply automatically (married: one earner; head of household: one child aged 4). Local income taxes are not included. 2026 federal rules from IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-32 and Publication 15; state rules from each state's 2026 tax documents; price levels from BEA regional price parities (2024). Overtime pays 1.5 times the hourly rate.
How the calculator works
Converting pay. The calculator turns whatever you enter into an hourly rate using your hours and weeks, then builds the annual figure: hourly rate × hours × weeks, plus overtime hours × 1.5 × hourly rate × weeks. A salary entered per year, month or two weeks is spread over your regular hours, so overtime is added on top of it.
Tax. Federal income tax uses the 2026 brackets and standard deduction; Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 and Medicare 1.45% (plus 0.9% above $200,000, or $250,000 for joint filers). State tax uses the selected state's 2026 brackets, deductions, exemptions and payroll taxes such as disability or paid-leave insurance.
Cost of living. The comparison multiplies your salary by the ratio of the two states' regional price parities. A state at 110 is 10% more expensive than the national average; one at 90 is 10% cheaper.

Salary calculator FAQ
How do I convert an hourly wage to a yearly salary?
Multiply the hourly wage by the hours you work in a week, then by the weeks you are paid in a year. At 40 hours and 52 weeks that is 2,080 hours, so $25 an hour is $52,000 a year. Add overtime separately: each overtime hour usually pays 1.5 times the regular rate.
How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?
Divide the annual salary by the hours you are paid in a year. A $60,000 salary at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is $60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 an hour. If you regularly work 45 or 50 hours on a salary, divide by those hours instead to see your real hourly pay.
Why is my take-home pay different from this estimate?
The calculator assumes no pre-tax deductions (such as 401(k) or health insurance), no other income, the standard deduction and only the credits that apply automatically. Withholding is also an estimate of the year’s tax, so paychecks can differ from the annual figure until you file.
How does the cost-of-living comparison work?
It uses the Bureau of Economic Analysis regional price parities, which measure how much more or less the same goods and services cost in each state than the national average. A salary is multiplied by the ratio of the two states’ price levels. It covers prices, not taxes or wages in the new state.
